Wicker Handbags – A Timeless Classic
- For myself and any other fashion savvy woman, it is essential to cover all your bases. From the perfect cocktail dress to those little blue shoes I only wear out at special occasions, having a little flair to go with my comfortable style is a must. Now, I know for many, wicker is a bit of a turn off, and lets face it, when I walk into home and see wicker sitting their in the living room a little part of me dies inside.
Instead, a wicker handbag should be used as a fashion statement during the warmer months, where new life abounds and everything is fresh and lively once again. The summer months are acceptable also for wicker handbags, but once the temperatures being to drop off, so to should this style of bag.In my opinion, a little bit of wicker goes a long way and too much completely destroys the entire outfit. A simple, small handbag made from wicker is a perfect addition to free flowing spring dresses and large sun hat. Plus, with the many different colors wicker is available in, it is possible to match a wicker handbag with just about any outfit I have.
There are many different wicker options for handbags, with some of varying sizes. I find the clutch wicker option a bit off-putting and I, for one, avoid this option. Generally, I only use a clutch when spending a night out on the town, and when I’m out on the town, I tend to dress up. Nothing about wicker says dress up. In fact, it is the very opposite. Wicker, to me, is the ultimate dress down material. This is why individuals in luxury homes have leather couches and not wicker couches. Wicker is saved for warm weather and the sun.
My wicker handbags must have a strap. As I stated earlier, the strap adds that nice accentuating piece of color to an outfit. Outside of this, the overall size of the handbag is up for debate. I do love larger, chunky bags, which I am able to store my entire life and the life of my neighbor into it, without breaking a sweat or the clamp on the top of the bag. The problem with this is wicker does not have the same durability and maneuverability of standard fabric, so it looks more like I’m carrying a delivery box under my shoulder, and not an actual handbag. The only real time I’d actually opt for the large wicker handbags is if I’m going to the beach. Wicker screams fun in the sun, so I see nothing wrong with going all out here.
In order to pick out the perfect size of wicker handbag, I always need to model it. Once slung over my shoulder, does it look out of place? Does it look boxy? Does it look cheap? These are the tree main questions I ask myself. Wicker, if made incorrectly, comes off as incredibly cheap, and you don’t want the place you store all your valuables looking cheap. If the item looks too boxy then it just isn’t my style. For other people it is fair game, but for me, no thanks. The out of place question often is associated with what I am wearing at the time of modeling the wicker handbag. I generally only match the color of the wicker handbag with the color of clothing I am currently wearing. If the colors are a no go, then back on the shelf goes the handbag.
In general, wicker is fine in moderation, as long as it is worn during the appropriate time of year. It is the perfect accent piece for many of my outfits, and although it is not extremely dressy, there are times where the dress-down casual look is the best fit.
